Insatiable Pursuit

It is because I can say that I truly love my work that I am able to accomplish it without compromise!

Kato, the first active Johnny's idol to make his debut as a novelist, is now in his tenth year of writing. He has been releasing new works consistently, and his reputation as a writer is growing. "After ten years of writing, I can see my own patterns to a certain extent. When I look back, I think that when you are young, there are some things you can't do unless you are pushed. At first, I was just desperate, and I was writing like a madman. Now, I am able to look at things a little more calmly, or rather, I am facing my work calmly and solemnly. The more relaxed I am, the more my writing progresses. I have always believed that everything is "trial and error." I try and try, and even if I fail, I never give up. That's what I've been doing my whole life. I like to analyze, and sometimes I even dare to try a different approach each time. I think it's important not to assume that this is the way to go.

I've gotten used to working two jobs, and it's normal for me to be thinking about a live tour, preparing for a role on stage, and writing when I get home. My brain is more active when I'm busy, and I'm the type of person who can make good use of my free time. When I'm writing, it's often around midnight and I'm lonely all the time...(laughs) When I reread what I've written, I'm not sure if it's interesting or not, and what I've written in a good mood is not necessarily good. I am very strict about my work, so my character may have gotten a little worse. (laughs) I always ask myself, "Kato, how is it going?" I read it from the editor's point of view and keep my cool. Of course there is pressure, but at the end of the day, I just have to do it.

I do have a certain amount of planning in my life. I set my own deadline for my novel work and have a rough schedule for the next six months. I was the kind of guy who would do his summer homework on a daily basis and make sure it was done (laughs). I don't get overwhelmed even when I have a lot of work coming at me. It's my work, so I can't just throw it away halfway, and if I can't handle it, I'd turn it down. It's rude to respond half-heartedly. I recently realized that not refusing is not cool. It takes about six months to prepare for a project. I'm an obsessive person, and once I'm hooked on something, I tend to go for it, so I try not to be averse to various things in order to broaden my horizons."

If you are interested in various things and increase your knowledge, it will become more interesting.

With a cumulative total of more than 2 million copies, the popular manga "Nigatsu no Shosha: Zettai Gokaku no Kyoshitsu" which realistically depicts the actual situation of junior high school exams, has been made into a drama, and Kato plays the top lecturer of the super prestigious junior high school exam cram school.

"Since I also took the junior high school exam, there were many parts that I could relate to when I read the script. I have played the role of a teacher or a cram school teacher before, but this time, one of the highlights is that the character is portrayed as a human being, not just one aspect of a profession.

To be honest, I'm not bad at teaching, but I cannot say I am good at it either so I had to go through a lot of trial and error to figure out how to act. Rather than being taught step-by-step, the best thing is when you have a question, do your own research, and find the answer. Whenever I have a question, I always try to answer it on my own. It's uncool to act like a know-it-all, and I think people who can't honestly say, "I don't know," are narrowing their own world. It seems that many people don't read instruction manuals these days, but I prefer to read them thoroughly before proceeding with operations. The more knowledge you have about anything, the more interesting it becomes, so don't make it a hassle. When I go to a restaurant and eat something delicious, I want to know how I can make it at home.

Recently, I have been researching delicious ways to eat oatmeal and developing recipes for it. It all started when an acquaintance asked me about dieting with oatmeal, and I was curious about it after that, so I tried it myself (laughs). In order to consume tuna, I tried making poke with oatmeal, and it was a surprisingly good match! I also learned to eat avocado, which I used to hate. I would like to expand my horizons and pursue my interests even in my everyday life."
